PROGESTERONE TREATMENT & MISCARRIAGE

THE USE OF PROGESTERONE IN PREGNANCY

Progesterone is a hormone that prepares the lining of the uterus during the second half of the menstrual cycle to nourish a fertilized egg. If the egg is not fertilized, it is shed with the uterine lining during the menstrual period. If the egg is fertilized, hormones like progesterone continue to prepare the uterus for pregnancy.

Early in pregnancy, it is important that enough progesterone be made to maintain the pregnancy. Otherwise, miscarriage will occur. Studies have shown that progesterone support can be helpful in those patients with previous miscarriage.

Life Choices Medical Clinic offers progesterone treatment for those women suffering from multiple miscarriages or threatened miscarriages. We can administer a progesterone blood test to confirm or deny low blood progesterone levels. If your blood test indicates low progesterone levels, than we can provide supplements that may correct your hormonal imbalance. During the course of the pregnancy, progesterone levels are drawn every two weeks and depending on the blood progesterone level, the dosage may be raised or lowered or discontinued during pregnancy.

FEW SIDE EFFECTS

Progesterone is generally well tolerated with a few side effects. There may be some soreness at the site of injection. This may be soothed by warm tub soaks or a heating pad and massage. Itching at the injection site can be relieved with Vitamin E oil.
